Build a  Floating Bench

(without buying brackets)

Let's transform an unused closet into a dreamy reading nook! Seating is key, and I'll guide you on how to DIY an upholstered floating bench, even as a beginner. For ultimate coziness and reading pleasure, this is your perfect project!

Materials Needed

For this DIY, you'll need 2x4s, a stud finder, corner brace, plywood, 3" upholstery foam, fabric, a saw, drill, screws, and a staple gun.

Building the Bench Frame

First, measure the space. Determine the bench width and depth, calculate your 2x4 requirements. Mark a level line on the wall for your bench height.

Find your studs. Cut your 2x4s to fit and screw the back and side braces to the wall. Then screw the front 2x4 to the side braces. Add a center brace for additional support.

Reinforcing the Structure

Strengthen your frame by attaching corner braces to each corner. Cut and attach the plywood top. Now, your bench frame is ready!

Prepping the Upholstery

Cut your upholstery foam to fit the bench. Measure and cut your fabric, adding extra for allowances. Mark the center of your fabric and the bench.

Attaching the Fabric

Staple the back edge of your fabric along the bench top. Position the foam on the bench, then staple the fabric from the front. Tuck in the extra fabric along the sides.

Perfecting the Corners

Staple the corners, making sure to cut a diagonal slit to prevent bunching. Cut off the excess fabric. Your bench is nearly complete!

The Finished Project

Voila! You've built a cozy, upholstered floating bench. Enjoy endless hours of comfortable reading in your new nook.
