One Room Challenge Spring 2019 Week 5: Feature Wall and Progress Report

It’s week 5 of the One Room Challenge otherwise known as the home stretch! My to-do list is lengthy but manageable. Take a peek at what’s happened this week…

Missed anything? No worries! Catch up on the previous weeks here.

One Room Challenge

Speaking of, if you found me via the One Room Challenge link-up, welcome! I’m Brianna, blogger extraordinaire at Bloom in the Black. I write all about home design made simple. I love sharing how-tos, inspiration, and advice on creating a dream home that works for real life.

Last week I shared that FINALLY figured out what to do with that pesky desk wall — paint it black of course! Why do I even resist at this point? Black is my jam.

The Mural, Take Two

OK, so my first attempt at hanging my Society6 mural was a bust, but thanks to their great customer service I have been given a chance to redeem myself. My master plan is to then turn this epic mural into a giant whiteboard wall. Cool, right?? Sneak peek:

Awkward Space Solved

The space between the windows has been a bit of a headscratcher for me. I had toyed with the idea of a bar cart full of art supplies but that would obstruct an important pathway in a small room. More wall art seemed like too much with the big mural and the framed bird picture.

At the end of the day this is an office so I wanted something either inspiring or functional, not a throwaway space-filler. Keeping that in the back of my mind, I (finally) had my lightbulb moment.

Fun fact about me: I’m a paper hoarder. Messy stacks of paper litter my desk at any given moment. It’s annoying and I can never find anything. So… what if I created a wall-mounted paper organizer? Hey, that’s a thing. Or it is now at least!

I’m going to mount a grid of wood chip clipboards on the wall to corral all the paper. My hope is that it will be easier to keep track of it all if it’s divvied up into small chunks that I can see all at once rather than in messy stacks that hide everything but the top sheet.

Big Question Mark(s)

I ended up ordering the desk legs late due to my indecision in week 2 about what I wanted to do with the desk (wood top, black legs or black top, wood legs). As of this writing, I haven’t received a shipping notification. Gulp.

We’ll see, I guess!

The other sorta question mark is the desk chair. I have one that I like well enough, but I wouldn’t say it’s a great match to my new and improved office. I’m keeping my eyes peeled for an affordable substitute but I’m not going to stress about it too much. Maybe I could spray paint the shiny legs black so it blends a bit better?

Finishing Touches

AKA, the fun stuff! Way back in the beginning I had planned to style the heck out of the cube console along the desk wall. However, I stole those cubes from the BFF Ladies Club (my kids’ playroom) and now their books are in stacks on the ground. That room is still a work in progress so I’m going to have to rehome the books into my office. I think that’s completely fine though — one of the big goals of the room is to be shared sometimes anyway!

I’ll still have plenty of opportunity for some fun styling. I’m hoping to sneak out this weekend to grab a few finishing touches in addition to what I already have. There is this great place up in Lowell called Crose Nest that has some killer plants and other cool randomness that just might work.

That’s all for this week, folks. Be sure to head over to the ORC link-up to check out all the other amazing participants, check in every Thursday for progress updates, and get excited for the big reveal on May 9!

It's week 5 of the spring 2019 One Room Challenge and it's the home stretch! Take a look at what's been done (black accent wall), what still needs to be done (whiteboard wall), and a cool new organization idea. #homeoffice #homeofficeideas #blackaccentwall
