Slow Progress is Still Progress: One Room Challenge Week 4

Week 4 and so much is still up in the air. I finished the stenciling and it looks phenomenal but took so much longer than expected. And since my focus was there, I’m way behind on selecting and ordering decor…

Slowly But Surely

Like I said, my beautiful stencil wall is complete! The original plan was to do all four walls but a.) that would have taken too long and b.) once we saw one wall in real life Matt and I decided it works much better as an accent wall anyway. Thank goodness I STARTED with that wall, right?

I used this shibori stencil and it was incredibly forgiving for a first-time stenciler like me. Once the challenge wraps, I plan to write up a post about how to stencil two ways: the right way and the lazy way. My personal favorite!

Making More Changes

I decided to reassign the brass and marble beside lamps from RevealHome to a more prominent spot. They’re so beautiful and I really want them to pop. Setting them on the dresser against the dark wall will highlight the materials far better than against the midtones of the acacia bed, so that’s the new plan.

This brass and marble lamp is perfect against the blue stenciled accent wall.

Speaking of the dresser, since the wall behind it will now be pattern-free, a black dresser might blend a bit more than I’d like. The lighter blue of the stencil pattern would be a good option in order to tie the two sides of the rooms together.

In terms of form, I’m planning to hack the ubquitious Ivar cabinets into a cool credenza slash bureau.

I love this simple, elegant hack from Antonio at Craftifair.

The Curtain Conundrum

The vision for these curtains is still eluding me. Quiet or loud? Pattern or solid? Warm or cool? Not to mention the lead time. Which let’s be honest, isn’t in my favor right now.

I think my best move to is opt for “good enough” curtains right now. Window treatments are way too expensive to go all in when you aren’t in love with them. Same goes for bedding.

I should probably be more concerned, but I was still painting on week 5 for my first ORC and that turned out great. Blind faith people. Blind faith.

Real Talk

It’s easy to get discouraged with your progress on a home project. There’s always something that takes longer than expected or gets messed up, but even slow progress should be celebrated.

I have a full-time job outside of blogging, so finding the time to do these projects can be TOUGH. But we all struggle with finding the time, right?

That’s one of the things I like best about the ORC. You can join in whether this is your full-time gig or your side gig or even just for fun! Everyone gets something different out of it and it’s all good stuff.

Next Steps

Figure out how to get my giant rug under my giant bed. Finally figure out the curtains and bedding. Get my butt to IKEA. Maybe I can do that next week though…

Until next week friends! And in the meantime, check out all the amazing work done so far by the 20 featured designers and the hundreds of guest participants.
