Big plans are in the works for 2019! Lots happening on the home front and on the blog. So what does 2019 have in store?
Guys, I have so many things to share with you all in 2019. Most notably: so. many. home. projects. Looking at what has been most popular in the short life of this blog, big room reveals definitely top the charts. So I hear you. Bring on more room reveals! Here is a master list of what you can expect to read about this year:
Finishing the basement
This is occupying so much of my head space right now. We are kicking off in a week or two and this isn’t just one big room with sheetrock and carpet. Oh no no no dear readers. We’ll be tackling…
A large (to me) media room with a ridiculous sound system. In addition to the general decor I’ll be talking about how to work with high-quality yet large and kinda ugly A/V components. Detailing a very special, very specific built-in console to conceal said components will be an angsty, dedicated post.
But c’mon. You know how much I love a good built-in. Check out our first foray into crazy custom built-ins here.
We’ll be working with some existing furniture as well as sourcing new stuff, so dealing with how to budget for the things that matter most (to you) and how to save elsewhere will be a very hot topic.
The big question mark for this space will be the half of the room behind the media portion. Will it be a sitting area? Game space? A jungle gym? I literally don’t know yet. TBD.
A home gym
Sure, it may seem extravagant to build a whole room to exercise in, but my husband is a dedicated yogi and I am trying to get back to being one. We also have an elliptical that nobody uses because it’s in a freezing basement.
Topics will include maintaining a non-stinky gym (we are hot yogis so… ew), how to make your gym into a space you actually WANT to use, and I even have an awesome collab in the works with a very talented yoga instructor. What would you like to hear about? How to build the perfect home yoga studio? A chillaxing yoga routine just for busy moms, dads, modern humans? An awesome giveaway? Let me know because we are in the process of nailing down details now.
A guest room… um, study
Yeah, it’s not officially a bedroom because of permits and such. It’s really a room that far-flung relatives will sleep in from time to time. This awesome space will also boast a full bath and possibly a kitchenette. But no closet! We are rule-abiding citizens. The big challenges with this room are going to be lack of natural light and making it functional and relaxing on a very small budget. It will be infrequently used so it doesn’t make sense to go all out on the furnishings, but I am determined to show you how luxurious and amazing you can make a space on a budget. I promise, your mind will be blown.
A full bath
It’s hard not go big because a cheap bath often looks like, well, a cheap bath. Luckily, it’s a very small bathroom so the cost of materials should be low. To be honest I haven’t thought this through too much yet but expect a teeny tiny splurge (floor!) then smart budget selections for everything else.
Finish the girls’ “apartment”
I had such a good start on this and then… holidays, reno plans, work, life. Screeching halt, people. The room works fine for right now but I definitely want to see this one through by the summer. I’ll have a couple of fun DIYs to share and some general advice for designing a kid’s space to work now and into the future.
The master bedroom
Ugh, it’s so bad. We are legit adults sleeping on a floor mattress. No exaggeration:
We are pretty easy to please as far as bedroom requirements. This will likely be a straight decor situation, but I think the before and after will be lit! The big question… do we keep the black walls?
Oy. Another pain point. Right now it doubles as a guest room but that obviously won’t be the case in a few months. I am a business owner who works from home and I think this room deserves its due. Again, this will likely be mostly decor, but I have some ideas for a little punch. I do spend an insane amount of time in here after all. Possibly another wallpaper design and I have a twinkle of an idea for a desk DIY that involves leather. I just need to see what I can source for materials. Stay tuned because that could be a good one!
Round 2 of the One Room Challenge
I had soooo much fun participating this fall. If you missed it, check out the reveal here. And if you aren’t familiar with it, it’s essentially a six-week challenge where participants are invited to transform one space in six weeks and share their progress along the way. It’s an incredible way to build community and to commit to finishing a room. Clearly, I have multiple spaces that could be candidates for this. I’m thinking either the office, the guest study, or, wild card, our main floor half bath. I’ll reach out to you guys to find out what you want to see as we get closer to the date!
Possibly one outdoor space.
I struggle with exterior spaces. Hard. We have a long way to go on the outside of our house and have this ginormous, beautiful country lot with so much potential. Plus a farmer’s porch that is begging for some love. I know I want to do something with our property. A fire pit and seating area at the very least. So… TBD.
Textile design and art prints
My design and art background are bleeding into this space, people. I’ve been playing with more pattern design and am working on some new art pieces. Are these things you are interested in? To purchase? To learn about? Let me know in the comments below!
A new feature
I have had a lot of inquiries into whether I offer edesign and just a general interest in design advice. Unfortunately, edesign isn’t really on the near horizon. This did, however, spark the idea for a new feature!
Do you have a design dilemma? A living room with a funky layout you just can’t figure out? Unsure of how to make your traditional hand-me-down furniture work with your mid-century modern sensibilities? If so, send me an email and you could be featured on Bloom in the Black! Email me at email@example.com with a description of your dilemma (relevant photos are highly encouraged) and you will be getting FREE design advice! I plan to have this as a monthly feature but could scale up if there is interest.
That about covers it! 12 months is a long time so obviously, things could change, but this is a pretty accurate snapshot for now.
But tell me… what would you like to read about? What do you need help with? What are you inspired by? I am taking any and all suggestions. Feel free to comment below or shoot me an email!
